Itinerary

One Day TourIasi-Rugionoasa-Neamt Monastery-Neamt Fortress-Sturdza Castle

This tour revolves around a full day, and there’s plenty of ground to cover, starting with the Ruginoasa Palace, which today houses the memorial museum “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”. It was built in the first decade of the 19th century after the plans of Viennese architect Johan Freiwald and it still preserves the characteristics of Gothic style, inspired by German romanticism, is square and each of the four facades has the same elements: broad platform and balconies supported on stone slabs.

Now it’s time to visit the Neamt Monastery, a Romanian Orthodox religious settlement, one of the oldest and most important of its kind in Romania. It was built in the 15th century, and it is an example of medieval Moldavian architecture. A jewel of 15th-century architecture, the church was built during Ştefan cel Mare’s reign and finished in the year when the Moldavian army won the battle against King John Albert (1497).

Now you’ve seen the Monastery, but how about the Neamt Fortress? A medieval fortress, built in the 14th century during Petru I of Moldavia’s reign. It was a defense system and was considered one of our finest fortresses.

And there’s one more castle on the way, before we return to Iasi. The Sturdza Castle from Miclauseni, also known as Sturdza Palace is a Gothic-style castle built between 1880-1904 by George Sturza and his wife Maria in Miclauseni village approximately 20 kilometers away from Roman and 65 kilometers from Iasi. Currently, the Castle is under the Metropolitan Church of Moldavia and Bucovina and was included on the list of important historical monuments in 2010. The palace was built on the vast property that used to belong to the Sturdza family since late 17th century.

It’s a shame that Romania does not have more highways. This can be a little time consuming sometimes but once you arrive at the destination, you almost forget about the time spent on the road. I especially loved the painted monasteries.
