HIGHLIGHTS

Mamaia, Constanta, Rasova Winery, Histria Fortress
Tour Details

It’s not as dark as it sounds; the Black Sea is one of the highlights of Romania. You know that we have them all: sea, mountains, hills; basically, all-natural landscapes you could think of are here, in Romania. And this time we move our attention to the coast, to the place where Romania’s entire population spends their holiday. This tour includes a wine tasting session, visits to a few forgotten fortresses, a day at the beach at one of our most famous resorts, and many more. Just remember that this tour can only be done around summertime, for obvious reasons.

Itinerary

Day 1Rasova Winery-Constanta-Mamaia

The road to Constanta, from Bucharest, is straightforward, going to the highway all the way to Constanta. But first off, how about experiencing some Romanian wine? How about a visit to Rasova winery, one of most famous wineries of Dobrogea country, next to the sea. Besides the wine tasting package, there is also a tour of the winery, with a local guide. Great way to start off a tour if you ask me.

Next up is the city of Constanta, Romania’s largest and most important port city on the Black Sea. It’s a wonderful place to visit especially in the summer, as it has the Black Sea with its beautiful beach resorts. And of course, the world-famous Casino in Constanta, built by King Carol the 1st in 1910. In its days, it was a cosmopolitan piece of architecture with many marine inspired decorations. Nowadays it remained just a beautiful landmark to admire while walking next to the pier in Constanta. Side note, Sony even made a commercial here to showcase their new 4K TV line-up.

And then, we’re off to one of the most widely known beach resorts in Constanta, Mamaia, located in the north edge of the town.

Accommodation in Mamaia.

Day 2Mamaia- Histria Fortress-Ibida Fortress

This day we’re only going to visit a couple of things, just 2 fortresses. But that’s happening in the second part of our day, after lunch, because before that, why not spend some time at the beach? After all, it’s a holiday.

Then after lunchtime we are going to see Histria Fortress, a Greek colony founded in the 7th century B.C. by the colonists from Milet, near the mouths of Danube, on the western coast of the Black Sea. It is the oldest urban settlement in the country, had a continuous development for 1300 years, starting with the Greek period and ending with the Roman-Byzantine period.

And the second one is Ibida; this archaeological site is displayed on 24 hectares, at the edge of the Slava Rusa village, is the only fortress through which a water is passing (the Slava brook). In the present day the fortress is mainly occupied by the village.

Then it’s back to Mamaia for accommodation.

Day 3Mamaia-Silistra-Tropaeum Adamclisi-Bucharest

Just because this is the last day, doesn’t mean that we have to go home straight away. We got a few stops along the way, first one being the The Tropaeum Traiani, a monument in Roman Civitas Tropaensium (site of modern Adamclisi, Romania), built in 109 in then Moesia Inferior, to commemorate Roman Emperor Trajan’s victory over the Dacians, in the winter of 101-102, in the Battle of Adamclisi.

And there’s also another small city to discover, Silistra, a port city. The city lies on the southern bank of the lower Danube river, and is also the part of the Romanian border where it stops following the Danube.

Then we’re off to Bucharest, marking this the end of our tour.

The Romanians really know hot to party hard. To be honest, we spent most of the time at the beach, as Mamaia is one crazy place. If you want to party on a budget, this is the way to go.

I was at the sea for only one day. But I had the opportunity to meet the guide in Constanta and he showed us around. The nicest place was the casino. Very good.
