Itinerary

Day 1Cluj-Viseu de Sus-Horse Waterfall

Starting off from Cluj-Napoca, the 4th largest city in Romania. Over the years the city has thrived , becoming very famous, hosting some of the best music festivals in Europe like Electric Castle and of course Europe’s best festival – Untold, and for the movie goers, the Transylvania Film Festival (TIFF). The Cluj-Napoca Tailors’Tower was built in the 15th century and rebuilt between 1627 and 1629, assuming its present form. It was named after the Tailor’s Guild, who took care and guarded the southeast corner of the city. The Saint Michael Cathedral – is a Gothic-style Roman Catholic church, the second largest church in Transylvania, after the Black Church in Brasov. The Evangelic Church is a place of worship for the Evangelican Lutheran Church in Cluj-Napoca.

Once around lunchtime, we’re off to Maramures Region, the highlight of our tour, and we’re going to circle around Viseu de Sus. But before we get there, our next stop is the Horse Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Romania (80 m high). Legend has it that a long time ago, a herd of horses were surrounded by a bear near the waterfall and they were so scared, they fell in the water and died, therefore this was named the Horse Waterfall. It can be reached on foot during a 2h hike, or by the chairlift.

And to finish it off, in late afternoon we are going to arrive at Viseu de Sus.

Day 2Viseu de Sus- Iza Meadows

In the morning, at 9AM, we are scheduled to go on board the Mocanita, the last European forestry railway (built in 1932) that was used for wood transportation. The train was build in Poland in 1949 and it’s still used today for tourism purposes. Take a ride through the forest, and travel back in time.

In the afternoon, our next objective is the Iza Meadows, located in the historical heart of Maramures, where age costumes blend perfectly with the purity of nature. Between the mountains and forests of Maramures, you will have the the opportunity to experience country life in the purest way possible.

Day 3Viseu de Sus-Merry Cemetery-Sighetu Marmatiei-Barsana Monastery

Quite a busy day today, following the footsteps of our ancestors, visiting some truly unique places, such as the Merry Cemetery; it’s safe to say that this cemetery is unique, because the grave markers celebrate life with beautiful images and gentle wit. This place marks each grave with a lively, beautifully carved wooden cross, painted blue containing original poems that disclose a little something about life and character; some of the verses are funny other are more whimsical.

Next up is Sighetu Marmatiei, also known as Sighet, one of the main towns in the Maramures region, an area noted for its rich centuries-old traditions. The inhabitants of this area have preserved, to an amazing extent, the rural culture and crafts of their Dacian ancestors.

And last but not least, the most beautiful monastery ever created, the Barsana Monastery, which now stands on a small hill surrounded by an orchard. It is one of the eight churches on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The name bârsan means a shepherd who keeps sheep with thick long wool, and the word became a surname during medieval times. The church was used for monastic purposes until 1791, when the monastery was abolished.

We had to leave from Bucharest and therefore the price was higher, but all in all, this was a great experience to have. Never knew there were so many interesting places in Romania.

What I loved the most here was the Merry Cemetery, something I have never seen before. My congratulations to John, our guide, and to Alexandra and Andrei for taking care of us.

I visited Romania a year ago, but I was here on business. But I had to opportunity to meet Andrei and now here I am. I wanted to discover more about this country and took the Maramures dreamland tour. If I would explain all that I have seen, it would take me around a full day. All I can say is, if you’re reading this, book with them, you won’t regret it.
