Tour Details

This one day tour features an extensive look at Bucharest, the capital of Romania, the largest city in the country. The city is well known for its wide boulevards, amazing buildings, the People’s Palace, and the Arc de Triomphe. Legend says that Bucharest was founded by a shepherd named Bucur, roughly translated into”joy” (from the Romanian word bucur-ie). In the 1900s, the city earned its well-deserved nickname: Little Paris. But that is something you have to see to believe. Today, the city is a mix between old and new, between traditional and modern, blending these elements together in such a way that you might even think that this was the plan all along.

One Day Tour

First thing to do is go through the northern part of town, basically on the part where you arrived from, for a tour at the marvelous and unique Village Museum, a place that showcases traditional houses from all over Romania; fun fact is that all of the houses here were brought from different regions in Romania, and were assembled here. It’s a must see for anyone who is interested in discovering our roots, out ancestor’s way of life, how it once was. Check out the video below if you’re still not convinced.

Then we’re going back towards the city center again, focusing on the attractions along the way, such as The Arch de Triomphe, Victory Square, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Revolution Square, the National Museum of Art (which back in the day was the Royal Palace). Of course, we wouldn’t miss the Old Town of Bucharest, but not yet. First, we are going to visit the second largest building in the world, after the Pentagon.

The Parliament house, also known as the People’s Palace, built by our last dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. And you must see it to believe it. Built during the “golden years” of communism. A truly spectacular piece of architecture; it’s amazing what they could accomplish. It now houses the Romanian Parliament and also serves as an international conference center. The interior has a luxurious display of crystal chandeliers, mosaics, oak paneling, marble, and floors covered in rich carpets.

As we go back towards the Old Town, there’s also the oldest princely residence in Bucharest; was most probably founded in the late 14th century, but the first recorded document about a fortress (or a princely palace) in this place is dated September 20, 1459, issued by Prince Vlad III Dracula.

Then, as promised, we have the old city center is the home of many art galleries, antique shops, coffee houses and nightclubs. You can walk along the narrow streets and aside from the numerous restaurants and terraces, you can admire old buildings that used the be the workplaces of craftsmen and merchants back the 1400s (Romanian, Austrian, Greek, Bulgarian, Jewish). Plenty of things to do here as well.

Please note that this tour is designed as a walking and driving tour, so it includes transportation as well. But, depending on your time, things can be shifted. It can be tailor made according to your needs, as a walking-only tour, or a driving-only tour. Up to you.

We arrived in Bucharest for the first time, and I have to tell you that our guide was phenomenal. We booked a wine tasting session and we got so much more. Besides the introduction into Romanian wines (which were great by the way), our guide Andrei also took us on a quick city tour (since the wine bar was near the center anyway). It was a great afternoon. Highly recommended.

Our trip was unforgettable thanks to our tour guides, Alex and Andrei. It was a whole lot more than just riding horses. They showed us around the city, took us out to eat at an authentic Romanian restaurant, showed us parks and even got to ride the train! Booking with Finding Romania is a MUST!
